Friday 29
th November 1974 was the scene of a great leap forward in the history of the British school of Brussels. This auspicious occasion marked the opening of the 12 and 13 common room. We walked in through the door (after having the corner of our tickets torn off) and 12 tonnes (approximately) of food and other goodies charged towards us from several tables, groaning under the weight of it all. A charming young lady with wavy blond hair plied us with alcoholic beverages. Soft (?) music resounded in our ears and everywhere we heard strains of happy conversation.

Suddenly our attention was diverted to the lady behind the man behind the man behind it all-yes, you’ve guessed right, Sheila Humphries, who declared our new common-room open. After the official bits the drinking, eating and dancing recommenced in earnest. We were entertained with a full length feature film: "The boot in the swamp, and whose hand was that….?"
Then we noticed three Russians, who had obviously come in from out of the cold to steal all the plans of the common-room. They played songs from "Fiddler", a very clever cover-up. They were followed by an unknown folk group, who will definitely go far. Thus went the evening-may we say many thanks to all concerned.
